After the lesson I walked about in the town for a little. I wanted very much to go into the Queen’s to see if Lisbeth was there, or merely to be in surroundings where she had once been. But although I wished passionately to look at her again I was anxious also that she should not see me. Not yet. I merely wished to look at her, to be in her presence. She was one of the most beautiful girls I had ever seen, but it was not merely her beauty I found compelling. Mair-Ann was as finely featured, fair-haired, and fair-skinned, but about Lisbeth there was also a warmth, a radiance, some strange glow, and a gaiety and sweetness. I thought little of her circumstances, who she was, where she lived, whether she worked or not. I cared nothing about these things. She lived for me in an ideal world in which there was nothing commonplace or dull but where all was beauty and brilliance and freshness.
